Applications of PTFE Tubing in Hot Melt Adhesive Equipment

In hot melt adhesive equipment, tubing needs to withstand elevated temperatures while continuously contacting adhesives and other process media. Temperature resistance, chemical resistance, inner-wall smoothness and long-term stability are therefore important factors.

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) tubing is widely used in fluid transfer and industrial equipment because of its low friction, chemical resistance and high-temperature capability.

1. Why is PTFE tubing used in hot melt adhesive equipment?

Hot melt adhesive normally needs to be heated and transported through the equipment before dispensing or coating.

PTFE has a very smooth inner surface and a low coefficient of friction, which can help reduce material buildup inside the tube.

Its chemical resistance also makes PTFE suitable for various adhesives, solvents and industrial fluids.

2. Where can PTFE tubing be used?

Depending on the equipment design, PTFE tubing can be used for:

• Hot melt adhesive transfer lines

• Internal connections

• Hot melt glue gun connections

• Dispensing equipment

• Hot melt coating systems

• Adhesive metering and transfer systems

• Automated hot melt equipment

The exact tubing specification should be selected according to the actual operating conditions.

3. Why do some applications require heated PTFE hoses?

If the adhesive temperature drops during transportation, its flow characteristics may change and the dispensing process may become unstable.

For this reason, some hot melt adhesive systems use heated hoses to maintain the required adhesive temperature during transfer.

A PTFE inner tube can be combined with heating, insulation and protective layers to form a heated adhesive hose.

4. Why is the inner surface important?

The condition of the inner surface can affect how adhesive flows through the tubing.

PTFE has low friction and non-stick characteristics, making it useful for applications where reducing material adhesion is important.

However, different adhesives have different viscosities, operating temperatures and chemical compositions. Therefore, the tubing should not be selected based only on the term “hot melt adhesive.”

Important parameters include:

• Adhesive type

• Working temperature

• Working pressure

• Tube ID

• Tube length

• Whether heating is required

• Bending requirements

• Fitting specifications

5. Thicker does not always mean better

The tube ID, OD and wall thickness should be matched to the actual application.

For example, a small dispensing system may require a small-ID PTFE tube, while a larger hot melt transfer system may require a larger ID and higher pressure capability.

Providing complete equipment parameters helps the manufacturer select a more appropriate tubing specification.

6. What information is needed for PTFE hot melt adhesive tubing?

When sourcing PTFE tubing for hot melt adhesive equipment, it is useful to provide:

Tube ID / OD: Inner / outer diameter

Length: Tube length

Working Temperature: Operating temperature

Working Pressure: Operating pressure

Medium: Adhesive or other medium

Heating: Whether heating is required

Fitting: Fitting specifications

Quantity: Required quantity

For replacement applications, customers can also provide the dimensions, length and fittings of the existing hose for matching.

The value of PTFE tubing in hot melt adhesive equipment is not simply its high-temperature capability. Its low friction, chemical resistance and smooth surface make it suitable for various industrial adhesive transfer systems.

For equipment manufacturers and end users, the right PTFE tubing should be selected according to the medium, temperature, pressure, dimensions, heating requirements and fittings rather than material name alone.
